Bucket Truck – Eliminating the Hazards of Electrocution

Individuals on bucket trucks working on utility lines high up in the air are a frequent sight across the country. Nonetheless, not so visible are workers who put up and take down festival lights and other seasonal decorations. They are not trained electrical workers; however, they routinely operate around live utility lines typically in the darkness of night.

The following electrical safety guidelines are important for people who use bucket trucks to do non-electrical work to keep themselves safe from electrical hazards. The guidelines are based on the standards established by various agencies such as OSHA and NIOSH.

* If you use equipment that increase your reach, the minimum distance you must maintain from power lines should be greater than the longest possible extension of the tool.

* Prior to commencing a job, check insulation barriers and other equipment for wear and tear. Do not use electrical equipment that is wet, has dirt on it, or shows signs of deterioration on the insulation.

* Always insulate nearby power lines and use approved protective equipment if your work is electrical in nature such as hanging lights or electrical signs.

* Workers around the bucket truck must avoid physical contact with the vehicle or any parts of it when it is in use near utility lines.

* If the work site is near power lines, enquire with the power company to see if they can shut the power off or install protective insulation over them for the duration of the work.

* Always treat utility lines as if they are live and never touch them with your bare hands.

* All electrical tools and equipment should have the correct rating for the job.

* Check and make certain that the bucket is adequately insulated if you are going to be working around electrical lines.

* You must ensure your equipment to prevent the creation of inadvertent paths to ground even if the bucket of the truck is insulated.

* Maintain a distance of at least ten feet from all electrical lines. The rule also applies to all equipment.

OSHA’s guidelines require workers to maintain a distance of at least 3 feet when working near insulated electrical lines rated at 300 volts or less.

NIOSH, nonetheless, recommends that for wires with less than and up to 50Kv, the minimum distance should be 10 feet. For voltages over 50kv, NIOSH recommends 10 feet plus .4 inches for every kilovolt over 50.

It is interesting to note that CFR 1926.550(a)(15)(i), which regulates distances between rigged loads and utility lines, states that the minimum clearance for lines rated at 50KV or less should be 10 feet or more.

The best safety practice is to maintain a distance of at least 10 feet from suspended power lines given that the greater majority of lines are normally not insulated.

Workers who use bucket trucks face numerous challenges while doing their job. In addition to electrical safety, workers need training on how to stop themselves from falling, deal with inclement weather, position the vehicle on uneven or rough work sites and manage traffic. Bucket Truck Operator Training, consequently, must be well rounded and should train the operator to handle all safety aspects of their work.
